Letter of Recommendation

We support students who plan to spend a semester abroad. We also support students who want to apply for a scholarship or for a master program at a foreign university.

Please note that it takes time to process each request and to set up a letter of recommendation. We cannot process applications sent to us less than four weeks prior to the application deadline.

1.  PREREQUISITES  FOR  OBTAINING  A  LETTER  OF  RECOMMENDATION  ARE:

  • Bachelor students should have completed the course “Internationale Ökonomik”, the course “International Economics”, or our “Bachelorseminar” with very good or good results by the time they apply for a letter of recommendation.
  • Master students should have successfully completed at least one of the following courses with very good or good results by the time they apply for a letter of recommendation: “Economics of Innovation”, “Empirical Industrial Organization (Advanced Course)”, or a related master seminar offered by Univ.Prof. Dr. Susanne Prantl.
  • Please send the following documents as one single pdf-attachment per e-mail to  Mrs. Ina Dinstühler no later than 4 weeks prior to the deadline of your application:
    1. A document confirming that the intended application requires a letter of recommendation (e. g. a pdf-file showing the website containing that information and the corresponding link).
    2. A document containing all the following information: deadline set by the respective institution/program, the addressee of the letter of recommendation, the address to which the letter of recommendation has to be sent and the contact information provided by the institution/program for further requests.
    3. The letter of motivation that you plan to submit at the institution/for the program, following the requirements of the institution/program, or a motivation letter indicating why you would like to apply for and why you would like to apply at the specific institution or for the specific program (1 DIN A4 page).
    4. A copy (pdf) of your high school diploma (Abitur /A level certificate).
    5. A copy (pdf) of your Bachelor certificate with grades (if already available) and your current transcript (Leistungsübersicht) including the names of the lecturers of the courses you took (can be attached separately). Please make sure that the transcript has been issued shortly before submitting it to us, so that we can get a picture of your most current grades.
    6. Your curriculum vitae in the form you plan to submit it at the institution/for the program or in tabular form.
    7. In case you are planning to spend a semester at a foreign university, we expect you to present a curriculum of courses you are planning to take during your semester abroad and an explanation of how these courses fit into your course of studies at the University of Cologne.
    8. (If available) the official template(s) for the letter of recommendation provided by the institution(s) offering the program(s).
    Please send these documents as one single pdf-attachment per e-mail to Mrs. Ina Dinstühler no later than 4 weeks prior to the deadline of your application.

2.  CONFIRMATION:

If your application is complete and has arrived on time we will get back to you as soon as possible. Please note again that we cannot process applications sent to us less than four weeks prior to the application deadline.

3.  INTERVIEW:

Provided you received a confirmation, there will be an interview testing your qualification for spending a semester abroad, for a scholarship, etc. and possibly also your knowledge in economics.
